Xcode 27.1 and the iPhone Duo simulator

Status · checked 2026-10-05

Xcode 27.1 beta is out. Apple released it on 18 September 2026 (build 27A9269) with the iOS 27.1 SDK and the iPhone Duo simulator. Apple’s announcement.

It is a beta: build and test with it now, but keep shipping with your release Xcode. App Store submissions need the final version, and Apple has not given a date for it. Pre-orders open 16 October and the device goes on sale 23 October.

Still beta 1. As of 5 October 2026, Xcode 27.1 has had no second beta and no release candidate since 18 September, while Xcode 27.2 reached its second beta on 28 September. There has been no public iOS 27.1 beta at all — and iOS 27.1 is the release iPhone Duo ships with.

Known issues in the beta

Apple’s release notes list these, with workarounds where there is one:

Checks that do not need the simulator

The simulator shows you what is wrong. Most of the fixes are old code making assumptions that stopped being true on 9 September, and you can find them with a search — including on a CI machine that cannot run the beta yet:

CheckWhy it needs no new tooling
Find hard-coded widthsA grep. The inner display is 626 points wide, not ~400.
Replace UIScreen.mainA grep, then read scale from the trait collection.
Fix symmetric safe-area mathsSearch for insets.left * 2 and similar.
Audit idiom checksiPhone Duo reports the phone idiom at regular width.
Run your iPad targetThe inner display is regular-width in both dimensions — your iPad layout is often the right one.

Snapshot tests at 626 × 890 and 466 × 678 points catch regressions cheaply in CI. They will not exercise the fold or the poses — keep a manual pass in Device Hub for those.

Common questions

Is Xcode 27.1 available to download yet?

Yes, as a beta. Apple released Xcode 27.1 beta (build 27A9269) on 18 September 2026, on its developer downloads page, and as of 5 October 2026 that is still the only 27.1 build — no second beta, no release candidate. It is not the final release: App Store submissions need the release version of Xcode, and Apple has not announced a date for it.

How do I get the iPhone Duo simulator?

Install Xcode 27.1 beta on a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later, then choose an iPhone Duo run destination. Apple's release notes call it the iPhone Duo Simulator runtime; if Xcode does not list it, check Xcode > Settings > Components. It runs inside Device Hub.

What is Device Hub?

The Xcode window where simulated devices run and physical devices are paired. It shows your app inside a bezel that resembles the target device, with controls specific to that device. Apple's Tech Talks describe controls to open, close, rotate and fold a simulated iPhone Duo, so a layout can be checked in every pose without hardware.

What can the iPhone Duo simulator not do yet?

Apple's release notes list three known issues: the first launch can take several minutes, StandBy is unavailable, and most app extensions cannot be run or debugged. Test extensions on a real device once hardware ships on 23 October.

What screen sizes should I test against?

The inner display is 626 × 890 points (1878 × 2670 pixels at @3x) and the outer display is 466 × 678 points. Snapshot tests at those two sizes catch regressions cheaply in CI, alongside a manual pass in the simulator.
